England and Scotland for Dad's 70th
May 1998
When I was home from L.A. on Christmas holiday, Dad started telling me
about him thinking about maybe doing some travelling around the country
on his own (since Mom wasn't as an adventurous a traveller as he'd like
to be -- he never goes anywhere without her -- and, turning 70 on his
next birthday, he wanted to take advantage of good health while he
still had it). So he batted around a few places he'd like to go,
then said the one place he'd always wanted to go but never had is
England. What? I'd been to England -- and Scotland -- twice
(a grad school trip and follow up), thanks to him and Mom paying for
the school trip. Guilt gulp! So I told him we could go to England
-- and Scotland, of course -- I'd be happy to take him. If he
paid for the plane tickets (I was an unemployed independent film
freelance script supervisor), and I could ask pal Francesca if we could
stay with her in her flat in London, and pals Rod and Rhona if we could
stay with them in Edinburgh.
